The route begins in Engelberg and continues southwest, ultimately arriving in the Jungfrau region. Some sections of the hike connect by lift, bus, or train, while others are "through hikes." If you follow the entire route, plan at least six days of travel. The actual duration will depend upon the weather, your stamina, and your predilection for diversions. Those with limited time can start at virtually any point along the route, or select suitable day hike sections. The routes described here are well-known and well-traveled. Some sections, including the trek from Engstlenalp to Planplatten, or from Faulhorn to Schynige Platte, offer relative solitude, while the Panoramic routes may be crowded. A few sections are fairly easy, while others require a higher level of experience and fitness. For each section of the hike, the level of difficulty is described to help you determine the suitability for your group. For the tougher sections, we offer alternate routes for easier walking. We also describe bail-out opportunities on trails that intersect with transportation routes. Also offered are suggestions for preparing for the trip as well as advice on gateway cities, train routes, and overnight lodging. The glorious höhenweg to Planplatten follows a ridgeline high above the handsome Gental Valley, offering spectacular views of the Bernese alps. The route includes areas of moderately strenuous ascent, flower-filled meadows, occasional snowfields, and stretches of ledge-walking with sheer exposure.The trail to Grosse Scheidegg starts as a wanderweg and transforms to a bergweg above Schwarzwaldalp. Much of the route follows the Rychen Brook through woods and pastures before opening to views of snowcapped alps. The trail ascends intermittently toward First, rises more consistently after passing the mountain lake Bachalpsee and climbs in earnest when it reaches the switchbacks of the unforgettable Faulhorn mountain. The entire route offers superb views and the panorama from the Faulhorn mountaintop is unforgettable. The fascinating and varied bergweg to Schynige Platte travels over the tops of small plateaus, winds through smooth rock canyons, and traverses snow fields and rock falls before reaching the spectacular panoramaweg of Schynige Platte. This scenic route follows a panoramaweg to the popular mountain pass Kleine Scheidegg before descending below the dramatic Eiger north face to Grindelwald.
